Academy FAQs

What is that "Buzz Word" we see & hear all the time, "Player Development"?

Player Development is a term coaches use to describe the process of Human & Soccer Development of a Child! Within soccer, the "Human/Child Development" should always take priority to soccer development. Physical, Physiological, Technical and Tactical (the four main components in soccer) challenges occur through activities, games & competition with other players and must be balanced with a player's cognitive thinking, age & characteristics. Using age appropriate activities, games & competition that meet the player's developmental needs enables the learning process. A soccer player's progress is created by the coach with progressive building blocks based on a fun, educational, environment where skills are learned over time.

"Player Development" is used by coaches a lot of the time as a "buzz word" to impress parents that do not know the true meaning. A guide to know whether the coach understands the meaning is the Soccer Qualifications within the program. Okalahoma Soccer Association requires a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) "National Youth License" to be held by the program Executive Director or Director to ensure that Academy Program player receive the professional instruction needed. Soccer is an "Adult Sport" played by "Children", the adult expectation of coaches & parents are usually focused on short-term results of winning. Academy soccer can be competitive through non-result orientated fun environment that will maximize long term "Player Development".

What is a Soccer Academy?

A Soccer Academy is a developmental program that is within an advanced learning environment. A Soccer Academy is for players who strive for excelled professional training & higher-level play. With age specific professional instruction, players are presented with "FUN" Soccer Activities that involve competition, by directly & indirectly, naturally maximizing soccer player development.

Why should my child participate in a Soccer Academy?

Academy Soccer is NOT for players that find recreational soccer difficult. A Soccer Academy presents greater challenges that meet the player’s needs. It is for those players who want to be challenged more than their current program & foresee a pursuit in select soccer.

Are there tryouts for the Academy?

There are no tryouts for the Academy program. Players will be placed in a "player-pool" that train & compete in games, based on their natural abilities & developmental progress. By grouping players by abilities it maximizes and enhances player development. Developmental progress allows opportunity for players to experience new challenges that echo's their Player Development.

Can my child participate in Academy AND play on a recreational team?

You CANNOT participate in both. Oklahoma Soccer Association & Green Country Soccer Association requires that a child may only participate in one program. This policy supports the "Player Development" process stated above.

Where/When will Academy players participate in matches?

The Academy matches/games will be played on the same weekends as the Oklahoma Premier League (OPL).

There will be additional optional leagues & tournament opportunities for Academy players. The locations of the matches are TBA by OSA, however Indian Springs has & is one of the major complexes used for OPL games.

The BASC/Hurricane Academy goal is to provide the developmental bridge between recreational soccer and select soccer through "Player Development".

Who will be the coaches?

The coaches will be provided & selected by the BASC/Hurricane Academy Executive Director, Boys Academy Director & the Girls Academy Director.

Where will the program take place?

The BASC/Hurricane Academy Program will be held at Indian Springs Soccer Complex.
